Co-founder of La Academia de la Nueva Raza, an organization in New Mexico committed to creating a growing body of knowledge expressed through oral history, folklore, personal history and the arts. Jaramillo was a member of the Black Berets (Gorras Negras), a group started in the 1960s to challenge power structures and to fight injustice inflicted on communities of color. Jaramillo used his sermons to draw attention to these injustices.
