Abstract
This research paper explores the ways in which Culturally Responsive Pedagogy (CRP) is good teaching and how Teach For America (TFA), an alternative teaching program, can better implement CRP practices in its preparation program called Institute. The purpose of this research is to recommend changes grounded in CRP practices for the Institute to better prepare TFA teachers for their two-year classroom placements. Four interviews of current and former TFA teachers were conducted to gain further understanding as to whether or not TFA currently teaches new corps members to be good teachers using CRP. The findings show TFA teachers are not taught culturally responsive pedagogy methods at Institute. Based on these findings, this paper recommends changes to the Institutes preparation of corps members in terms of culturally responsive pedagogy. Recommendations include: corps members instructing learners drawn from the community in which they will teach, develop an induction program in which corps members will co-teach with master teachers in Institute and after Institute, and establish CRP foundation utilizing new induction program prior to teaching summer school.
