Abstract

Teaching through music has been shown to help learners retain information, and improve student motivation, enjoyment, and confidence, while decreasing anxiety. Music can be used as a teaching tool across disciplines and at any age level. In the world language classroom, popular music gives students a relevant connection to the target culture. My research provides a case study of teaching through popular music in a sixth grade level one Spanish class at a public suburban middle school. Students' learning experiences with the song "Vivir mi vida," sung by Marc Anthony, addressed all four Colorado State Standards for world languages. The project examines the effect of teaching through popular music on student enjoyment, motivation, and vocabulary retention.
