Description

Historic documentation of life at the turn of the 19th century created by residents of Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1901 for the citizens of 2001. Under the direction of Louis R. Ehrich, a prominent 19th century businessman, the items were sealed in a chest which was stored in various buildings on the Colorado College campus until the official opening January 1, 2001 at the Charles Leaming Tutt Library. Contents of Ms349, Fd 96, Business men and Shields family - John G. Shields include: 1 4-page, handwritten letter, dated August 3, 1901, addressed "To the business men of Colorado Springs in the year Two Thousand and One," signed by John G. Shields, with appendix "Estimate of Capital and Annual Business in the following lines"; 1 3-page, handwritten list of the "leading business men" of Colorado Springs, by John G. Shields; 4 b&w photos: "Master George Kendall Shields," "Mrs. John G. Shields," "John Graff Shields," "Frederick H. Morley"; 1 leather-bound copy of "The Mercantile Agency Reference Book" dated July, 1901, published by R. G. Dun & Co.; 1 printed bill of the Shields-Morley Grocery Co.;1 printed shipping invoice of the Shields-Morley Grocery Co.; 1 printed notice of shipping rates from the Denver and Rio Grande Express with typewritten schedule of rates addressed to Mr. J. G. Shields; 1 2-page, typewritten account, dated August 3, 1901, describing the wholesale feed, flour and grain business in Colorado Springs, signed by C. B. Seldomridge; 1 printed business card "Seldomridge Bros. Dealers in Flour, Hay, Grain, Salt and Seeds"; 1 printed brochure giving class rates of the Union Pacific Railroad Co.; 1 printed rate sheet for the Southern Pacific Co. and the Morgan Steamship Line; 1 printed invitation from Shields-Morley for the Colorado Quarto-Centennial Jubilee; 1 printed credit application to Shields-Morley; 1 printed inventory of goods carried by Shields-Morley; 1 printed booklet "Denver and Rio Grande R.
