Abstract

This work approaches Euripides Bacchae through the lenses of irrationality and personal identity. Through the research and writings of Jane Ellen Harrison and E. R. Dodds the paper examines how Euripides portrays the irrational through the actions and relationships in the Bacchae. Euripides demonstrates throughout the Bacchae that the irrational is as much a part of human nature as the rational and without equal expression of both a person will drive themself insane. In addition to the paper there is a translation of the Bacchae which was adapted into a script. This script was used for a staged production of the Bacchae in the Cossitt Amphitheatre. In addition to examining the connection with the irrational the stage production also examines the plays connection to the natural world, queerness, and play. The play is set outside of time where 1960's-70's psychedelic rock meets traditional Athenian drama.
