Abstract

In this thesis I will provide insight into the effects of superstars within the NHL. Many fans are ecstatic when their general manager signs someone to a superstar deal, whether they are securing a player they have drafted or signing someone new as a free agent. Signing a superstar may not be in a fans best interest, but it certainly is for the ownership groups. Using salary and team performance data collected from the 2014-2015 season to the 2018-2019 season, this inquiry will utilize a multilinear regression model to analyze how superstar signings affect team performance and economic success. The study finds that similarly to prior research there is a strong correlation to superstars and team revenue, even when accounting for the extra amounts necessary to pay these superstars. However, unlike previous research, I find no evidence to suggest that superstars make any significant impact on the teams on-ice performance in the National Hockey League.
