Abstract
This study analyzes the impact of Airbnb presence on the sale price of single and multi- family homes in Chicago. Home sharing companies like Airbnb have attracted attention in economic research for the many effects associated with their introduction and growth in an area. In response to the growing body of research and diverse public reaction to Airbnb presence, legislators in several U.S. cities have passed laws curbing Airbnb growth. Despite Airbnb having a theoretically indeterminate effect on house prices, an increasing body of literature finds an increase in Airbnb presence is associated with increase in house prices and rents. This study seeks to confirm those findings in Chicago, over a ten-year period, and it finds that a unit increase in the number of Airbnb listings in a zip code is associated with a 662 dollar increase in the price of single and multi-family homes.
