Abstract
Previous studies have shown that multiculturalism and multilingualism may both enhance and decrease the cognitive performance of certain ethnic groups. Due to a lack of research on the positive effects of multiculturalism on Black ethnic groups, the present study attempts to replicate previous findings by examining how different types of code-switching positively affect the decision making and average response times of Black individuals living in North America. The amount of time a person lives in North America does not predict the amount of general code-switching a person does. Additionally, there was no relationship found between code-switching and cognitive performance. Even so, the data provides more context about code-switching experiences and theoretical trends that may be used to create a standardized scale for future studies.
