Abstract

This essay lays out the background research and development of an educational exercise to locate a museum’s role on a range from temple-like to forum-like. This project pulls heavily from the influential museum theory texts: “The Museum, a Temple or the Forum” by Duncan F. Cameron, “The Critical Museum Visitor” by Margaret Lindauer, and “The Art Museum as Ritual” by Carol Duncan. The educational exercise is titled “The Museum’s Role Locator”. This project aims to make museum theory more accessible and engaging. The purpose of this work is to educate the public on the potential roles museums can serve so that they may advocate for the community needs of a museum.
