This thesis explores the possibilities of blending East Asian music elements into Western contemporary composition through in-depth and hands-on studies of composition. A final composition recital was held on March 8th, 2024, featuring five original works of mine. This current study focuses mainly on three pieces I composed throughout last year, “Matsuri”, “Aki”, and “A Lonely Confession”. I will begin by discussing the music analytical research I conducted, how I got inspired by other composers to incorporate East Asian elements in each of the three pieces, and ultimately, what could be improved in my future compositions. Additionally, by documenting my composition process, I have summarized the tips and insights I have learned from this thesis project, which I wish to impart to those who are embarking on their creative journey.
