Cleopatra has captivated popular audiences for centuries. This paper seeks to understand the origins of such a dynamic narrative by returning to the poetry written by her Roman contemporaries. In doing so, it becomes clear that Cleopatra’s image was weaponized to promote Roman values and Roman superiority in a way that has had a lasting impression on her image.
