Abstract

In the academic year 1923-1924, ten Chinese students sailed across the Pacific Ocean and enrolled at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, making "the largest Oriental Club city ever had". Their collective presence drew attention from the community in forms of not only curiosity and hospitality but also racial prejudice and discrimination. This archival project attempts to reconstruct the everyday lived experiences of Chinese students as racial minorities at Colorado College in the early 20th century. In particular, it explores ways in which their study-abroad lives as racialized subjects were translated into these students' active discourse of Chinese nationalism and national identities.
