Abstract

Privacy concerns on social media platforms have become a pressing issue with the recent growth of these platforms. Users are concerned with how exposed their pictures and posts are as well as how their data is used by social media apps. This study examines user perceptions of privacy in social media by focusing on how social media users define privacy and utilize privacy features on these apps. The purpose is to investigate how privacy impacts users preference towards social media apps and if it is a defining factor towards choosing what app to use. They were also asked about a hypothetical app called Personally, which has a QR-code friend system as an alternative to traditional user search and friend request that all social media platforms use. Through a survey of 60 student participants, this research analyzes the privacy consciousness of users, social media usage, and engagement with privacy features. This examination will help shed light to how younger people (18-23) define privacy and how that translates to how they use social media apps such as Instagram and Snapchat. This will also help explain any influence to users preferences towards a hypothetical app Personally which puts privacy at the forefront over platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat.
